PUWER stands for the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER).
“These Regulations, often abbreviated to PUWER, place duties on people and companies who own, operate or have control over work equipment. PUWER also places responsibilities on businesses and organisations whose employees use work equipment, whether owned by them or not.
PUWER requires that equipment provided for use at work is:
• suitable for the intended use
• safe for use, maintained in a safe condition and inspected to ensure it is correctly installed and does not subsequently deteriorate
• used only by people who have received adequate information, instruction and training
• accompanied by suitable health and safety measures, such as protective devices and controls. These will normally include guarding, emergency stop devices, adequate means of isolation from sources of energy, clearly visible markings and warning devices
• used in accordance with specific requirements, for mobile work equipment and power presses” (Source: www.hse.gov.uk)
Sponmech offer PUWER 1998 surveys to businesses who are looking for advice on what they need to do for their machine to be compliant and safe.
If you are unsure whether your machinery meets current machine safety standards including PUWER, Sponmech can help you.
We have been carrying out expert PUWER 1998 inspection and surveys in England, Wales & Scotland for many years.
Business owners have a legal duty to protect workers from accidents that may arise in the workplace. The absence of a guard on certain machines could be fatal.
Every piece of machinery in any workplace should be risk assessed in line with PUWER 1998. If your machinery has not been inspected or assessed by a qualified health and safety professional, you could be putting your workers’ safety and your business at risk.
Whether you've recently invested in new machinery that requires PUWER 98 inspection, or you're looking to upgrade older equipment to meet current guarding standards, Sponmech is here to help.
We will always consider your operational requirements when advising on PUWER 98 machine guarding compliance.
Booking a PUWER 1998 safety survey with one of our dedicated, NEBOSH certified safety engineers will give you both the peace of mind and the safety compliance advice that you’ll need.
Our comprehensive PUWER 98 inspection report will include a detailed traffic light system indicating compliance/noncompliance and advisory points on your machine’s safety and compliance.
All of our reports also include photos of your machinery, our site sketches and our notes. Your report will usually be sent to you within 7 working days of the PUWER machine inspection.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) estimates that inadequate machine guarding causes over 40,000 injuries every year.
Some of those injuries can be fatal. In order to prevent these incidents from happening, the HSE recommends that employers should "take effective measures to prevent access to dangerous parts of machinery".
Regulation 11(1) of The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 states: Every employer shall ensure that means are taken in accordance with paragraph (2) which are effective.
A. To prevent access to any dangerous part of machinery or to any rotating stock-bar; or
B. To stop the movement of any dangerous part of machinery or rotating stock-bar before any part of a person enters a danger zone.
Sponmech’s guarding is PUWER compliant. All machinery guarding designed and manufactured by Sponmech come with certificates of conformity, are fully HSE compliant and where the application requires it, will also be CE marked.
